1. The Tokyo Taxi Rate Explained Simply
Officially Set
The Tokyo taxi rate was officially set on January 1, 2018. Taxi tariffs in Japan are officially set by cities or districts. The taxi tariff Tokyo was last set in January 2018 and published in the official tariff ordinance. It is binding for all taxis and taxi companies within the compulsory driving area and may not be exceeded or undercut. This is ensured by officially calibrated taximeters installed in the taxis.
How the fare is made up under the Tokyo taxi rate:
The taxi tariff in Tokio is based on the time of day your ride takes place. During the day, which is from 5:00 am to 10:00 pm, the base fare is ¥730. This base fare includes the first 2.00 kilometers of your journey. After you have traveled more than 2.00 kilometers, each additional kilometer costs ¥320. If the taxi is stopped or moving very slowly, a waiting time charge of ¥3085 per hour applies.
At night, from 10:00 pm to 5:00 am, the charges are different. The base fare during these hours is ¥876 and also covers the first 2.00 kilometers. For any distance beyond 2.00 kilometers, the price per additional kilometer is ¥384. If you experience waiting time during the night hours, there is an hourly waiting fee of ¥3700.
To use a taxi, simply look at the light indicator. A red light means the taxi is available and free to take passengers. A green light means the taxi is already taken and cannot be hailed. All charges are calculated according to the official Tokio taxi tariff, so passengers can expect fares to be calculated in a clear and consistent way.
When your journey ends, the final fare will reflect the base fare, the distance traveled beyond the first 2.00 kilometers, and any waiting time charges that may have applied during your ride. The fare is always stated in JPY (¥), making it easy to understand how your taxi trip is calculated in Tokio.
