1. The Sydney Taxi Rate Explained Simply
Officially Set
The Sydney taxi rate was officially set on February 1, 2018. Taxi tariffs in Australia are officially set by cities or districts. The taxi tariff Sydney was last set in February 2018 and published in the official tariff ordinance. It is binding for all taxis and taxi companies within the compulsory driving area and may not be exceeded or undercut. This is ensured by officially calibrated taximeters installed in the taxis.
How the fare is made up under the Sydney taxi rate:
The Sydney taxi tariff sets out how fares are calculated for taxi rides in the city. The fare you pay is made up of three main parts: a base fare, a charge for every kilometre travelled, and a waiting time fee if the taxi is stopped or moving very slowly. The tariff changes depending on the time and day of your journey.
From Sunday to Thursday at any time, and on Friday and Saturday between 6:00 am and 10:00 pm, the Sydney taxi tariff applies a base fare of $3.60 when you start your trip. For each additional kilometre you travel, the fare increases by $2.29 per kilometre. If your taxi is waiting or moving slowly in traffic, there is a waiting time charge of $56.68 per hour.
During late night hours on Friday and Saturday, from 10:00 pm to 6:00 am, the tariff sets a higher base fare of $6.10. The price per kilometre also increases during these hours to $2.73 per kilometre. The waiting time charge remains the same at $56.68 per hour.
Your final taxi fare in Sydney is calculated by adding the base fare, the distance travelled multiplied by the per kilometre rate, and any applicable waiting time charges. This structure helps passengers understand in advance how their fare is determined based on the time and distance of their trip.
