1. The Shanghai Taxi Rate Explained Simply
Officially Set
The Shanghai taxi rate was officially set on January 1, 2024. Taxi tariffs in China are officially set by cities or districts. The taxi tariff Shanghai was last set in January 2024 and published in the official tariff ordinance. It is binding for all taxis and taxi companies within the compulsory driving area and may not be exceeded or undercut. This is ensured by officially calibrated taximeters installed in the taxis.
How the fare is made up under the Shanghai taxi rate:
The taxi tariff for Shanghai sets specific rules for how fares are calculated. The fare structure is divided into two time periods: day and night. The day rate is valid every day from 5:00 am to 11:00 pm. The night rate applies from 11:00 pm to 5:00 am.
During the day, the base fare is 14.00 ¥, which covers the first 3.00 km of your journey. Once you travel beyond 3.00 km and up to 15.00 km (3.00 km base fare plus 12.00 km), each additional kilometer is charged at 2.70 ¥ per km. If your journey goes farther than a total of 15.00 km, each kilometer beyond this point is charged at 4.05 ¥ per km. If your taxi is waiting in traffic or stopping, there is a waiting charge of 40.50 ¥ per hour.
At night, the fare structure is similar but with higher rates. The base fare is 18.00 ¥ for the first 3.00 km. For travel beyond 3.00 km and up to 15.00 km, the cost is 3.50 ¥ per km. For distances further than a total of 15.00 km, the price is 5.20 ¥ per km. The waiting charge at night remains 40.50 ¥ per hour.
The Shanghai taxi tariff aims to ensure that passengers clearly understand how their fare is calculated from the start to the end of their trip. All prices are in CNY (¥). This structure applies to all standard taxi rides within the city.
