1. The Reykjavik Taxi Rate Explained Simply

Officially Set

The Reykjavik taxi rate was officially set on October 1, 2023. In Iceland, cab prices are set by the individual cab companies and are not subject to state regulation. Prices can therefore vary, but there are standard rates that are used by many providers. The Icelandic Transport Authority (ICETRA) is responsible for supervising cab traffic.

How the fare is made up under the Reykjavik taxi rate:

The taxi tariff in Reykjavik determines how much you pay when you take a taxi in the city. The amount you are charged depends on the time and day that you travel. There are two different tariffs: a day tariff and a night tariff.

The day tariff is valid from Monday to Friday between 8:00 am and 5:00 pm. When you start your taxi trip during these hours, the base fare is 790.00 Kr. For the first 2 kilometers, you pay 452.00 Kr per kilometer. After the first 2 kilometers, the price is 324.00 Kr for each additional kilometer. If the taxi is waiting for you, such as in traffic or at your request, there is a waiting time charge of 10,620.00 Kr per hour.

The night tariff applies from Monday to Friday between 5:00 pm and 8:00 am, as well as all day on Saturday and Sunday. The base fare remains the same at 790.00 Kr. For the first 2 kilometers during this period, you pay 533.00 Kr per kilometer. For any distance beyond 2 kilometers, the price is 403.00 Kr per kilometer. The waiting time charge increases to 13,200.00 Kr per hour under the night tariff.

To calculate the fare for your trip, start with the base fare. Then, add the cost for the distance you travel, following the rates for the first 2 kilometers and for any additional kilometers, according to the time and day you are traveling. If your taxi spends time waiting, the waiting time charge is also added. This system in Reykjavik helps passengers understand the way their taxi trip is charged and what costs to expect.
