1. The Hong Kong Taxi Rate Explained Simply

Officially Set

The Hong Kong taxi rate was officially set on July 14, 2024. Taxi tariffs in Hong Kong are officially set by cities or districts. The taxi tariff Hong Kong was last set in July 2024 and published in the official tariff ordinance. It is binding for all taxis and taxi companies within the compulsory driving area and may not be exceeded or undercut. This is ensured by officially calibrated taximeters installed in the taxis.

How the fare is made up under the Hong Kong taxi rate:

The taxi tariff in Hongkong is designed to provide a clear and structured way for passengers to understand how their fare is calculated. When you start a taxi ride, there is a base fare of HK$ 29.00. This base fare covers the first 2.00 kilometers of your journey.

After you have traveled 2.00 kilometers, an additional charge of HK$ 10.50 applies for every kilometer. If your trip includes any periods where the taxi is waiting, such as when it is stuck in traffic or stopped at your request, the rate is HK$ 102.50 per hour.

There are certain extras that may be added to your fare. If you book your taxi by telephone, an extra charge of HK$ 5.00 applies. If your trip uses a harbour tunnel, the fee for this is between HK$ 10.00 and HK$ 15.00, depending on the tunnel used. For each piece of luggage, there is an additional charge of HK$ 5.00.

Passengers should be aware of these charges so they can easily calculate and understand the total cost of their taxi ride under the Hongkong taxi tariff.
