1. The Helsinki Taxi Rate Explained Simply

Officially Set

The Helsinki taxi rate was officially set on January 1, 2024. In Finland, cab prices are no longer set by the state since the deregulation of the market in July 2018. Instead, cab companies can set their own prices, which has led to different fares. The responsibility for setting prices therefore lies with the individual cab companies. There is no statutory upper limit for cab fares. However, companies must inform passengers of the total price or the basis for calculating the price before the journey begins. They are also obliged to state the fare for an example journey of 10 kilometers and 15 minutes. If this example price exceeds 40 euros, the driver must expressly agree the price or the price basis with the customer.

How the fare is made up under the Helsinki taxi rate:

The Helsinki taxi tariff explains how taxi fares are calculated in the city. Fares are based on the time of day, the initial fare, the distance travelled, and any waiting time during your trip.

From Monday to Saturday, between 6:00 and 18:00, the base fare is €14.40. This base fare includes the first 7.63 kilometres of your journey. If your trip goes beyond this distance, each additional kilometre costs €1.14. If the taxi needs to wait for any reason, such as traffic or waiting at your request, the charge is €68.40 for each hour of waiting time.

From Monday to Saturday, between 18:00 and 6:00, and all day on Sunday, the night tariff applies. The base fare remains €14.40, but it includes 6.69 kilometres. For every kilometre past this distance, the cost is €1.30. Waiting time during these hours is €78.00 per hour.

To sum up, the Helskinki taxi tariff charges you a base fare that covers a set distance at the start of your ride. If your journey is longer, you pay a set price for each additional kilometre. Waiting time is charged separately per hour, depending on whether it is day or night. This makes it clear and transparent how your taxi fare is calculated in Helsinki.
