1. The Cork Taxi Rate Explained Simply
Officially Set
The Cork taxi rate was officially set on December 1, 2024. Taxi tariffs in Ireland are officially set by cities or districts. The taxi tariff Cork was last set in December 2024 and published in the official tariff ordinance. It is binding for all taxis and taxi companies within the compulsory driving area and may not be exceeded or undercut. This is ensured by officially calibrated taximeters installed in the taxis.
How the fare is made up under the Cork taxi rate:
The Cork taxi tariff sets out how taxi fares are calculated for different times and days. There are two main periods: the day tariff and the night tariff. The day tariff applies from Monday to Friday, between 8:00 am and 8:00 pm. The night tariff covers all other times, including from 8:00 pm to 8:00 am on weekdays, as well as all day on Saturdays, Sundays, and bank holidays.
When you begin a taxi journey under the Cork tariff, a base fare is charged at the start of your trip. For rides during the day tariff period, the starting fare is €4.40. During the night tariff, the starting fare is €5.40.
The fare increases based on the distance you travel. For the first 15 kilometres, the price is €1.32 per kilometre during the day and €1.81 per kilometre at night. If your journey is longer than 15 kilometres, the cost for each additional kilometre is €1.72 during the day and €2.20 at night. The fare displayed on the meter automatically includes these rates as you travel.
If the taxi is waiting or stuck in traffic, there is a waiting time charge. This is €23.60 per hour during the day and €31.80 per hour at night. The waiting time is added automatically if necessary. The final price you pay at the end of your journey is made up of the base fare, the distance travelled, and any waiting time that applies.
